HARMONY WORKSHOP INFORMATION

WORKSHOP INFORMATION

Facilitating this assessment is an overarching objective of the Harmony workshop by reaching consensus on our understanding of the size, chemistry and resulting optical properties of the aerosol. I see the scattering to submicrometer mass as a valuable tool in achieving this understanding. If common scattering ranges are used for different platforms and methods and if submicrometer scattering to mass values (submicrometer) are generated from both impactor and size distribution data then these values can at least be compared to each other. The chemistry (C), optics (O) and size-distribution (D) groups should work together toward this objective.
 

DATA FORMAT and NEEDS

• Please use ASCII files.
• Include Decimal Time (to at least 4 decimal places) in files and figures.
• Prepare at least one "best" example of your data for each stratified category - see site web page.
• If you can, provide your group coordinator with example data or files before the meeting.
• If you have applicable data also prepare for any direct platform comparisons (eg. C-130-Ron Brown)
• Be prepared to discuss sampling techniques and their influences on your data including:
• Sampler used?
• Bulk or size segregated?
• If size segregated, cut sizes? (Preferably in 50% aerodynamic cutoff diameters)
• Measurement RH?
• Chemical species analyzed?
• Typical time resolution?

PRIMARY WORKSHOP COMPARISONS WITHIN AND ACROSS PLATFORMS

• Coarse and fine particle mean chemical compositions and mass fractions including organics and soot.Coarse and fine scattering coefficients and their ratio
• Absorption Coefficients and Single Scatter Albedo
• Volume (and/or mass) concentrations and mean diameters and spread (sigma) for accumulation and coarse mode aerosol from (OPC, FSSP, APS)
• CN and Number concentration and mode mean diameters and spread (sigma) for DMA
• Submicrometer Scattering/Mass Ratios
• f(RH) and D/Do - although few may have this data (Ogren, Ron Brown?) it is important data for a number of the workshop issues and comparisons. Any plots from any platform of either parameter as function of RH should be presented (or sent to coordinator if you cannot attend). A valuable reference for various discussions.
