WEATHER
GENERAL OVERVIEW
The meteorological situation as
it is expected to be at 0000 UTC on Sunday,
April 15 is shown in the 24 hour forecast chart. A surface ridge line
to
our south will bring anticyclonic flow conditions to the area south
of 38 N. The
frontal system associated with the weak low near 45 N will have
passed into the eastern part of the Sea of Japan. Behind it the remainder
of the
Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea will be mostly clear, with moderate
winds from the W and SW. Bands of cirrus clouds will continue to move
off the
coast of China around 30 N. A weak trough of low pressure north
of 38 N will into the Bohai Sea later in the day, but is not expected
to move
far enough south or intensify sufficiently to be a concern to us. Ridging
in
the upper level flow over western China makes major dust outbreaks
unlikely
during the next few days, but minor episodes of dust are to be
expected.
The expected situation for
0000 UTC on Monday, April 16 is shown in the 48 hour
map. The ridge line will remain in the area, and skies will remain
primarily clear north of approximately 30 N. Scattered clouds are likely
in the
western Yellow Sea area and along the west coast of Korea. A weak
disturbance along the frontal system moving into the Bohai Sea has
the potential
to develop into a closed circulation. If this development is slowed
or
halted the front will likely pass from west to east north of approximately
34 N.
However, it is possible that the disturbance could grow and bring the
front south, to pass through the Cheju area and possibly closer to
Iwakuni by
Tuesday.
Following are the surface wind forecasts for the Cheju vicinity and
the ship's
location for the following 48 hours. Near Cheju, at 1200 UTC on April
14, NW at 5-8 ms-1; at 0000 UTC on the 15th, WSW at 8 ms-1; at 1200
on April 15,
SW at 10 ms-1; at 0000 UTC on the 16th, SW at 8 ms-1;
and at 1200 on the 16th, SW at * ms-1.
For the ship's location,
at 1200 UTC on the 14th, SW at 10 ms-1;
at 0000 UTC on the 15th 10 ms-1 from the WSW;
at 1200 UTC on the 15th and through 0000 on the 16th, SW at 10-15 ms-1;
at 1200 UTC on the 16th, SW from 5-10 ms-1.
on the 14th WSW at 8-10 ms-1;
at 0000 UTC on the 15th SW at 8-10 ms-1; and at 1200 UTC on the
15th SW at 8-10 ms-1.
DISCUSSION
The clouds shown along the west coast of Korea in the 48 hour forecast
are
expected to extend onshore and not to interfere with flights along
124
E, at least south of 38 N. The cirrus clouds south of 30 N on Monday
the 16th
are expected to remain so, and high clouds north of 30 should be
intermittent. We will investigate the likelihood of a stable layer
at the
surface at Cheju for this period and include this in the next report.
SUMMARY
No flight operations are planned for Sunday, April 15. We will monitor
the
conditions in the areas near Cheju and the ship's location for important
developments. Possible coordinated flight operations in the area SE
of Cheju on
Monday warrant special attention to the predicted conditions in this
area, and this will be included in the next report.

129 30E.
The Twin Otter took off at approximately 0200 UTC to fly south of Iwakuni to the
southeast of Kyushu Island, vicinity of 32N,132E, and conduct
radiation and aerosol characterization measurements.
