GENERAL OVERVIEW
The meteorological situation as it is expected to be at 0000 UTC on
Friday,
April 13 is shown here. A broad band of clouds along 40 N from
approximately 115 E to 135 E will be the eastern section of a region
of
cyclogensesis. Winds will be westerly over much of the Sea of Japan,
and
mountain lee waves are likely to form east of Korea around 36-38 N.
South of 34
N the low-level winds west of 130 will be dominated by an
anticyclone south of 30 N. The air there will be mostly clear, and
the winds
will be weaker than in the southern Sea of Japan.
The expected situation for 0000 UTC on Saturday, April 14 is shown here.
A weak
low pressure center will have formed and be at approximately
36 N, 125 E; the fronts associated with this system will not be strong,
but
clouds could still be widespread. Near-surface winds will be southerly
south of Japan and shift to southwesterly north of 33 N east of this
system.
Following are the surface wind forecasts for the Cheju vicinity and
the ship's
location for the following 48 hours. Near Cheju, at 1200 UTC on April
12, WNW at 8 ms-1; at 0000 UTC on the 13th, WSW at 5 ms-1; at 1200
on April 13,
SW at 10-12 ms-1; at 0000 UTC on the 14th, SW at 10
shifting to NW at 10 ms-1.
For the ship's location,
at 1200 UTC on the 12th, WNW at 10 ms-1;
at 0000 UTC on the 13th 12 ms-1 from the W;
at 1200 UTC on the 13th SW at 12 ms-1;
at 0000 UTC on the 14th W-SW at 8 ms-1; and
at 1200 UTC on the 14th SW at 8-10 ms-1, shifting to
NW at 8-10 ms-1 after 1500 UTC.
SUMMARY
The conditions expected for Friday, April 13 will bring interesting
aerosol
plumes and a low probability of clouds to the planned areas of operation
of the Brown, C-130 and the Twin Otter.

Activities today include making high resolution measurements along a
latitudinal
transect near 33-35N. The C-130 will make measurements in this
latitude band near 124 and 126E. Kosan is at 126.5E. The Twin Otter
will fly
between 127.5 and 128.5E. The Nagasaki radar is located near
130E and the Ron Brown will be near 130E at 35N.
Plans for tomorrow have the Ron Brown located near Oki island at 35deg45minN
and
132deg30minE. They will be sampling there all day. There
will be a MISR local mode pass centered at 0205UTC (1105 local)13 April
centered
on Oki. The C-130 will fly north to work near the Brown
through the period of the Terra overpass (radiation characterization)
and then
move south to fly in the more concentrated dust and pollution near
Amami-o-shima (28.3N,129.5E) (aerosol characterization and gradient).
The Twin
Otter will fly south of Iwakuni along the east side of Kyushu
Island (28N, 128E) and conduct radiation and aerosol characterization
measurements.
MISSION PLANS:
PRIMARY MISSION:
The C-130 will fly north near Oki for the first portion
of the flight for
radiation characterization and measurments in support of the Terra
overpass. They will then proceed south to the vicinity
of Amami-o-shima
(28N, 128E) for gradient aerosol and radiation measurements. The
Twin Otter will fly to along 132E and between 30 and 30.5N
for radiation
and aerosol gradient measurements
