Weather discussion
The weather situation for 0000 UTC, Tuesday, April 10 is
shown in the 24 hour
forecast depiction . The low pressure center near 50 N, 125 E will
be moving toward the NE. The frontal band will extend to at least 30
N, 110 E.
On the cold air side of this boundary there will be a wedge of air
filled with dust.
Clouds and showers will preceed this frontal zone as it passes
toward the SE over the Yellow Sea on Tuesday. The low pressure
system south of Japan will be moving toward the east, and is expected
to
intensify somewhat east of 140 E.
The situation at 0000 UTC on Wednesday, April 11
is shown here. The frontal
boundary discussed above will lie west of southern Japan, and
dust-laden air will lie behind the front. The temperature and moisture
contrast
across this boundary are large in this case, makng the front an importat
locus of strong winds, showers of rain and probably of thunderstorms
and
turbulence. The low pressure center SE of Japan will have associated
with
it a region of clouds and scattered showeres, but this will be far
enough east
of Iwakuni to be unimportant to our operations.
The following winds are forecast for the vicinity of Cheju and for the
ship's
location. For Cheju at 1200 on April 9, NE at 8 ms-1; at 0000 UTC on
the 10th, SSw at 10 ms-1; at 1200 on the 10th, SE-E at 8-10 ms-1; at
0000 UTC on
the 11th, E at 10-12 ms-1, shifting to N at 12 ms-1 to reflect
the approaching cold front; at 1200 on the 11th, SW 10-12 ms-1.
For the R/V Ron Brown,
at 1200 UTC on the 9th, NE 10 ms-1;
at 0000 UTC onthe 10th, NE 8-10 ms-1;
at 1200 on the 10th, N at 8-10 ms-1;
at 0000 UTC on the11th, NNW at 15 ms-1; and
at 1200 UTC on the 11th, NNW at 10 ms-1.
Ops SUMMARY
The next anticipated flight day for the C-130 is Wednesday, April 11.
There will
be very interesting scientific conditions in the Yellow Sea area, but
a
strong frontal boundary will lie between Iwakuni and that area. It
is
anticipated that the Twin Otter would fly next on Thursday, April 12,
and it is
very likely that aerosol plumes of interest will be accessible then.
Ron Brown steaming southwestward from 39 24N, 135 06E for possible
intercomparison with Twin Otter in vicinity of 39N, 134 30E.
Twin Otter took off at 0100 UTC for an aerosol characterization flight
over the
Sea of Japan including a possible intercomparison with the Ron
Brown.
No C-130 flight today.
PRIMARY MISSION:
No Twin Otter flight is planned.
Tuesday is a HARD DOWN DAY for the C-130 with no access to the aircraft.
Pre-flight briefing times(UTC): N/A
Update times(UTC): UPDATE FOR WEDNESDAY FLIGHTS AND PLANNING MEETING
FOR
THURSDAY FLIGHTS WILL BE HELDAT 1900 JLT (1000 UTC) ON TUESDAY
SHIP OPERATIONS:
After intercomparison with Twin Otter, Ron Brown will steam toward
vicinity
of 38N, 130E to await passage of cold front and major dust outbreak
behind.
