GENERAL OVERVIEW

The weather depiction for 0000 UTC, Sunday, April 8 is shown here . It is
anticipated that there will be scattered to broken clouds in
the Yellow Sea, especially north of 34 N during the day on Sunday. Near Cheju
and the ship's location the winds will be from the ESE
and SE, respectively. There will be a surface ridge line (area of high pressure)
near 40 N east of Korea. Chemical transport model
results indicate that significant aerosol plumes will be found in the area.
Satellite images show dust being transported in the area north of
37 N, east of 120 E. A flight track for the C-130 is being planned near 133 E to
intercept these plumes. A flight plan for the Twin Otter
to sample near the ship's location has been filed. SE of Japan there will be
multilayer clouds, thunderstorms and showers of rain.

The situation at 0000 UTC on Monday, April 9 is shown here. There will be
increased clouds and precipitation, at least intermittently, in
the area north of 30 N both west and east of Cheju. Clouds and showers are also
likely west of Korea, especially west of 125 E. There
will be scattered and broken clouds in the area north of 35 N, east of 130 E.
The southeasterly flow will bring material from Japan into
the Japan Sea during this time.

DISCUSSION

The frontal system shown on the depictions discussed above will move slowly to
the east over the next 4-5 days. Disturbances
propagating along this front, crossing the Chinesse coast around 30 N, could
grow into weak weather systems which could influence the
cloud and transport distributions. Model results suggest that this will happen
repeatedly during this period.

SUMMARY

Conditions are generally favorable for the planned flights of the Twin Otter and
the C-130 for Sunday, April 8. There are uncertainties
about the transport and meteorological conditions with respect to possible
aircraft flights on Monday, April 9.
