The cold front will move across the Sea of Japan rapidly, and is expected
to
slow markedly when it crosses shouthern Japan. Thus the weather
depiction, Image 1, shows the frontal zone and associated multilayered
clouds
aligned approximately along 35 N on Tuesday morning. There is a high
probability of rainfall in the vicinity of this front north of 37 N,
with lower
probabilities south of there, decreasing as the day goes on.
Meteorological conditions will improve in the area around Iwakuni on
Wendesday,
April 4, as shown in the forecast weather depiction, Image 2. The
front will have passed, and may begin to dissipate in the southern
sections. The
associated clouds will become broken and the coverage and depth of
the clouds will decrease as another transient anticyclone moves off
the coast of
China, moving SE from approximately 35 N. Clouds and possible
precipitation will be aligned along the northern coast of Japan, especially
east
of 135 E. The extensive area of convective clouds which will be east
of
130 E by Wendesday may limit flight options south of 30 N, but the
extent of the
cloud cover and areas of precipitation will beomce better defined
by Tuesday's planning meeting.
Winds will strengthen yet again along the track of the R/V Ron Brown
during the
next 36 hours. At 1200 UTC on April 2 the winds are expected to
be 10 ms-1 from the SSW; at 0000 on April 3, 12.5 ms-1 from the SSW;
at 1200 UTC
on April 3, 10-12.5 ms-1 from the SW, followed by a
wind shift sometime between 1500 and 1800 UTC; by 0000 UTC on the 4th
of April
the winds should be 15-18 ms-1 from the north.
The winds will also vary at Cheju during this period. At 1200 on April
2, SW at
7.5 ms-1 in the area; at 0000 UTC on April 3, 10 ms-1 from the
north; at 1200 UTC on the 3rd, 10 ms-1 from the NNE; and by 0000 UTC
on the 4th,
5 ms-1 from the NE.
Clouds may encroach on the planned rendesvouz of the R/V Ron Brown and
the Twin
Otter on Tuesday near 32.5 N, 134.5 E. The discussion at
the planning meeting did not result in any proposal to fly the C-130
on Tuesday.
At the pre-flight briefing for the Twin Otter on Tuesday morning we
will review
cloud conditions and winds expected along the proposed flight track
and in the sampling area along the ship's track
