ST MEETING 17 July, Forecast for 18 July - DOY 199 Dear Trish. ST meetings are getting interesting, now that conditions turn right and we all want to do everything. As you'll see from the ST report below, the ClearLAG for tomorrow (Fri) is called OFF. So ship should go to near Sagres for participating in CLEARCOLUMN tomorrow . PLEASE SEND US A MAIL BY 0600Z Fri, WITH YOUR POSITION AT AROUND 1200Z Fri. A close position SSW (= downwind of Sagres) would be OK. Frank ST meeting 0717 Thursday Meteo Outlook DAY N+1. Upper levels: ridge line from E Azores to Iceland moving slowly E and bringing subsidence over the area; cold low NE of France moving E. NW and W winds. Low levels: elongated anticyclone extending from S Azores to N of British Isles, somewhat reinforcing and extending more eastward over W Europe; low W of France moving slowly E; thermal low over N Africa. NE and N winds 12-16 Kt over ocean, weak variable over Portugal and costal areas. MBL-depth around 1100 m over ocean, Madeira and Canaries, steady. Clear skies expected around Portuguese coast, Sagres, Cadiz Gulf and NW Africa coast, increasing toward SW to broken layers of Sc reaching Madeira and N Canaries. Anthropogenic air expected both in the MBL and FT over NE part of the area, including W coast of Portugal and Sagres, moving SW toward Canaries; dust is not excluded in this area since some trajectories come from zones where dust is present (N Africa and surroundings). Over Tenerife, anthropogenic air expected below 800 mb, advected from Iberian Peninsula, and clean air above. DAY N+2. Similar patterns than N+1: the high extends more E affecting W Europe and favouring the outbreak of polluted air. Stronger winds at surface 18 Kts over ocean, still weak variable over Portugal. Anthropogenic air expected both in MBL and FT around SW Portuguese coast and Sagres moving toward Canaries. Over Tenerife, still anthropogenic air below 800 mb, perhaps mixed with some dust, and clean above. DAY N+3. All patterns v. similar to day N+2. On day N+4, itīs possible that a weak trough moving E crosses the ACE-2 area aloft; then a low tends to form over the Iberian Peninsula, and the anticyclone tends to reinforce over Azores, and to move somewhat W. Polluted air is still expected over NE part of ACE-2 area. Cloud pattern and MBL-depth wonīt vary significatly. Today Thursday 1. Full LAGRANGIAN 1st and 2nd flight with C130.
