ST MEETING 02 July, Forecast for 03 July - DOY 184 (It appears the date below is incorrect) ST meeting 0701 Wednesday Meteo outlook DAY N+1: Similar situation than day N. Upper levels: Cold low over British Islands with trough-line along Portuguese-coast; ridge over Northern Atlantic; prevailing upward air movements over Portugal and Sagres, and subsidence over the remaining area; NW and W winds. Low levels: Low over British Islands with tendency to fill, and high of 1028 mb over Azores, reforcing; NW winds north of Sagres latitude, 10 Kt on average, veering to NE southward with 15 Kt on average. Clean air advected everywhere, except perhaps over Sagres in the MBL, since 975 trajectories hug Iberian Peninsula. Broken of cumulus with some rain north of Sagres latitude, and scattered to broken, mainly of stratocumulus, over the remaining area, with amount increasing from Sagres to Madeira and Canarias; still possibility of some rain north of Tenerife. DAY N+2: Upper levels: Ridge NE of Azores creating subsidence over the whole area, strong around Portugal; prevailing NW winds. Low levels: low over England filling, and high of 1032 mb N of Azores, reforcing and moving to NE, gradually favoring an european polluted-air outbreak; winds from NW at northern area, 14 on average, N at Sagres latitude, and NE southward with 20 Kt on average. Still clean air, except over Sagres in the MBL, since trajectories below 800 mb hug the coast of the Iberian Peninsula. DAY N+3, N+4: The high is reinforcing and moving toward NE, most likely resulting in an european polluted-air outbreak over the area in the MBL. At surface quite strong NE winds (20 Kt on average) blowing off the Iberian Peninsula. MBL-top will notably decrease (to about 1000-1200 meters) due to both subsidence and warm advection above 800 meters. Clear skies over NW-Africa, Sagres and Portugal, and also over about 400 KM off-shore from these zones; then stratocumulus cloud-deck increasing southwestward, toward Canarias and Madeira. Furthermore, above 800 mb winds tend to blow from Africa, so a dust outbreak is possible in the FT above this level. Operations Today 1. First complete HILLCLOUD from 0000 till 0600Z. Clean conditions 2. Coordinated meas. between ship and Sagres till 1500Z 3. Possible detection of volcano plume by IZO LIDAR. Check needed. Thursday 4. Clean full LAG planned to start around 2200Z, with ship as North as possible on 11W00', but not exceeding 40N00'. 5. Feasibility of CloudyCOL (with Pelican) to be discussed in morning 6. Citation flight, possibly looking for volcano plume: coordination with IZO/TNS Friday 7. Continuation planned full LAG. Saturday/Sunday 8. Expected to be transition days between clean and polluted air masses over ACE-2 area. Monday 10. Possible start of polluted full LAG. Flight by ARAT to make LIDAR cross section of European plume. Date should be transferred to Ops. C. before first C130 LAG flight. General HILLCOUD to communicate with IZO after their evening meetings, in GO situation
