ST MEETING 28 June, Forecast for 29 June - DOY 180 (It appears the date below is incorrect) Dear shipmates. We understand your distress and I wish I could do something to cheer you up. We are getting all quite disappointed by what the weather does since the beginning of ACE-2. Keep sampling as much as possible during your approach of Sagres from the NW, since the air passing the ship also passes over Sagres and it is the homogeneous subsiding air mass we'd have followed in the Lagrangian. The anchor positions you indicated would be OK for a clear LAGR if the air comes from the NE. Now its from NW and I'd suggest to sample either NW of Sagres or SE of Sagres as long as needed before you can get into Sagres on Monday. Clearance should be OK but I will confirm as soon as Sagres tells me. Sagres asks you to do water leaving radiance measurements tomorow Sunday between 1100Z and 1200Z since there is an ADEOS pass over the area. Note also the volcano. The plume will probably past south of ACE-2 but the Lidars should watch it. Keep the faith: we still have 4 weeks to go. Frank ST meeting 0627 Friday Meteo outlook DAY N+1: Aloft cold low over France; another one over Azores; ridge W of Canarias; subsidence over the whole area; W to NW winds quite strong; clean air advected everywhere. Low levels: Low E of France; another one over Azores; high NW of Azores; prevailing NW winds on the northern part, NE on the southern, but quite weak everywhere. Clean air arriving at Tenerife; although some trajectories over Sagres come from near Ireland and U.K. air must also be considered clean. Scattered to broken cloud deck, mainly cumulus on the northern part, including Sagres and ship, and stratocumulus on the southern, including Madeira and Tenerife. Isolated rainfall, more likely at the north. MBL-depth no changing significantly, growing something over Tenerife. DAY N+2: Aloft low near Azores moving eastward affecting ACE-2 area; W and SW winds quite strong; strong upward air movement NW of Madeira; clean airadvected everywhere. Low levels: low near Azores with frontal system moving eastward affecting central and southern part of area; prevailing variable weak winds, turning counterclockwise around Azores and Madeira. Overcast with rainfall around Azores and Madeira, also possible isolated thunderstorms; scattered to broken, mostly of stratocumulus, on the remaining area. Clean air advected everywhere. MBL rising around Azores and Madeira. DAY N+3: Low around Madeira affecting the middle part of ACE-2 area, with prevailing upward movements; lot of cloudiness and rainfall between Madeira and Sagres. Winds turning counterclockwise around the low at all levels. Advected air most likely clean everywhere. The front associated to the low could affect Tenerife from the west. Day N+4: the low tends to fill, and a strong anticyclone to develope near Azores re-establising anticyclonic circulation overACE-2 area. Operations Today 1. Clean full LAGRANGIAN was called OFF at 0700Z based on the trajectories available at 0200Z. A Low is approaching the ACE-2 area much faster than predicted during the last two days. This caused a rapidly changing situation which didn't allow a safe initialization of the experiment. 2. Citation test flight 3. Reports of volcano eruption on Montserrat (Caribbean) on 25 June (height 30.000ft) and 26 June (height 20.000 ft). Windows of ACE-2 forecast to be enlarged to predict movement of the clouds Sunday 4. Clean and unstable conditions over ACE-2 area 5. Pelican clean CLEARCOLUMN flight Monday/Tuesday 6. Clean and unstable conditions to remain over ACE-2 Wednesday 7. Re-establishment of High of Azores expected to commence.
